While cheering for Lamar my freshman year I was saddened by the lack of student attendance at sporting events. I saw our student athletes playing hard and performing well, but without anyone there in support. I was also disappointed that our students miss out on the student section experience that many alumni of other schools remember as one of the best parts of their time at college. Since I am no longer cheering, I took it upon myself to improve student attendance at our games, and school spirit in general.
The Peckers were born from this effort. I started an unofficial group of students that attend every football and basketball game and liven up the student section. The response we have received has been overwhelming, within 2 weeks of our founding our twitter account had over 300 followers and people began to recognize us on campus. The University has also been supportive and we have appeared in Lamar marketing videos, had coaches reach out to us, and had news stories run about the group. As the leader of The Peckers I have personally been interviewed for a podcast and radio show, the LU Moment.
